We pull hollow-tine cores 2–3 inches deep on a tight spacing across the entire lawn, then leave the plugs on the surface to break down. Within two weeks of rain and mowing they melt back into the turf and take their organic matter with them. Raking them off throws away half the benefit.

Spike aerators — the shoes, the tow-behind spike rollers — do the opposite of what you want. They punch a hole by compressing soil sideways, which makes the compaction worse. Hollow tines remove a plug and give the surrounding soil somewhere to expand into. That difference is the entire service.

Afterward

Water normally and mow as usual. The plugs look rough for a week or two and then disappear on their own. If you are going to overseed, do it the same day while the holes are open.
