Water it in the same day. Do not bag your clippings for the next few mows — let everything cycle back into the soil.
Will it smother my grass?
Not at this depth. We spread a thin layer that the grass blades still poke through. A heavy application that buries turf is a different job and not one we recommend.
Does it smell?
For a day or so, faintly, like a garden center. Properly aged compost does not smell like manure.
Is this the same as topsoil?
No. Topsoil is mineral dirt and mostly adds bulk. Compost is decomposed organic matter and adds biology and water-holding capacity. For an established lawn, compost is what you want.
Can I do just top dressing without aeration?
You can, and it still helps. But on compacted soil the compost sits on top instead of working in. Aerating first is what gets it down where the roots are.
